paintings, in primarily pastels, of land and seascapes
About Me:
Artist Bio
A native of Maryland, Cathy Harville worked for 20 years in the chemistry industry. In 2000, she exchanged her lab coat for a painting apron, and started to capture the landscape and waterscapes around us, using pastels and water media. Pastels remain her favorite medium, highly valued for their vibrant, clean colors, and jewel-like glow.
Cathy belongs to several area art leagues, and is a juried member of the Artists' Gallery in Columbia, MD. She also has a shared studio, the Red Door Studio, in historic Savage Mill, in Savage, MD, near Laurel.
Artist' Statement
My goal is to create a composition that relies primarily on color, to encourage the viewer to explore the art, and connect with it in an individual way. While I often suggest a story, I also employ a sense of uncertainty, so the viewer will become involved, on an emotional and/or thoughtful level. Although I paint many secluded and peaceful places, my use of line and color creates vibration and movement, indicating a life force is at work.
My paintings reflect natural places, including those that are in danger of development, as well as those places that may go unnoticed as we hurry along in a busy world. If I can save a small part of the planet through painting, then I will be at peace with the footprint I leave behind.
